We’re at that age…

I never really had an issue with age. Even though I will be 29 in 2 months, I still feel like I’m 12 years old half the time, and 23 the rest of the time, so it’s never really bothered me.

Lately, though, I can feel things starting to change.

We’re at that age now – that age where people around you are not only getting married, but also doing all that grown-up stuff like buying houses, investing in their future, HAVING BABIES!!!

It’s a beautiful thing, and I’m SO happy for those friends of mine who are at that stage… but I just don’t feel ready!!! I’m not ready to be an auntie!! I’m still one of the kids!!

Anyway, along with baby bumps, swollen feet and bizarre cravings comes the Baby Shower!! Now I’ve never planned a Baby Shower in my LIFE but since the first girl out of my group of friends is about to pop any second, this weekend we threw her a surprise baby shower.

It was actually a lot of fun despite my initial fears of spending the afternoon with 15 girls (we all know that is just too many emotions and hormones in one place)!

For those of you who are in the same boat as me – at that age – here are all the ideas and games for the Baby Shower that you could use too should you need to plan one!  *note – I got these from all different sources and do not claim any of the material to be my own*

Who Is Mr. Chip?

For those of you who have been following this blog so far, you may have noticed that my lovely mother has been commenting on some of the posts.

At first I was hesitant to “approve” her comment on one post in fear that she would expose us as the crazies that we are, but then in the end, I thought “what the heck!?” This is my life – and I’m sharing it with you :p

My mother is an amazing woman. She’s always smiling, laughing, light-hearted and warm. Nothing fazes her. Nothing really gets to her. She’s always zen.

I dont know about you, but I would LOVE to be this way! Personally, I have days when I’m super hyper, incredibly grumpy (that’s when my friends call me “Shrumpy” instead of “Sheena”), crazy excited and randomly in a slump. But nope – not my mother.

So as mothers do, my mom tries to pass on her wisdom to me. Her latest lectures have even led to the development of a character whom she loves to bring up all the time. His name is Mr. Chip.

According to my mom, Mr. Chip is this little dude on your shoulder (see where it comes from? “Chip on your shoulder”??) who is constantly whispering negative things in your ear and trying to put you down to see if you can overcome his taunts and remain positive. Apparently I let him win too often cuz she now brings him up ALL THE TIME!

She tells me to tell Mr. Chip to shut up if he tries to make me sleep in 5 more mins, or if he tells me I’m not good enough or I can’t do something. She once sent me a random message, out of nowhere, saying “Mr. Chip is always present. Beware of him. You just have to control Mr. Chip and now allow him to control you.”

*insert eye-rolling emoticon here*

The thing is, as irritating as this whole Mr. Chip thing is, every single time my mom brings him up, I laugh so hard that I forget about the bad mood, or negative voice, or whatever it is that’s getting me down and I just feel so grateful and thankful to God for giving me such a crazy but loving and wonderful mother.

My mom is pretty smart so I sometimes wonder if this actually is her tactic or if she really believes in Mr. Chip.

Either way, her mission is always accomplished.

Click here to see her PUBLIC POST on my blog regarding Mr. Chip… I was mortified at first, but then accepted that THIS is my reality :p

The Curse of Being an Expat.

I absolutely love living in the UAE.

It took some time to fall in love with it, but it’s definitely become home over the past 5 years.

And as much as I love the weather, the fact that there is a resort-calibre beach 5 mins away, the idea of having the best of both Eastern and Western cultures, the FOOD, etc. There is one thing that makes me absolutely miserable about being an expat.

I hate missing out on big events for friends and family back home.

This week is one of my closest friends from high school’s weddings and I just couldn’t get the time off to go back…  I can’t tell you the number of times I got all choked up and teary-eyed today while my mom described how much fun the “Sangeet” (music party that Indian weddings have in the days leading up to the wedding) was.

You grow up with your friends and somehow just take for granted that you’ll be there with them on their milestone moments – weddings, first child, etc.  I just can’t believe that I’m missing this part of my friend’s life.

So this blog post is dedicated to my dear friend Sonia. I am with you in spirit this week, I am so happy for you, and I wish you all the love, happiness and joy you could ever dream of as you begin this new chapter in your life.

Okay I’m gonna go cry in a corner now.

The Dilemma of Being a Loyal Customer.

I have always been a creature of habit.

Since I moved here, I started going to this Arabic restaurant – “Chandelier” in the Marina Walk in Dubai.

I love it! The food is amazing, I take all my guests there when they visit the UAE, I often spend afternoons sitting by the fountain reading books or even writing blog entries, and I know each and every staff member there by name.

The atmosphere is my favourite in the UAE, and the friendly smiles make me feel like it’s my second home. (My friends actually do refer to it as my second home).

But lately, I’ve also found a new love for Reem al Bawadi. This was never a problem before because Reem al Bawadi was on one side of town and Chandelier was on the other. So whenever I was on THAT side, I’d go to Reem; and whenever I was on THIS side, I’d go to Chandelier…

But NOW… Dilemma.

Reem al Bawadi has opened a branch IN Dubai Marina Walk… and it’s beautiful! AND all of my favourite staff from the other branches are now here in Marina.

So today I find myself parking my car and walking towards Reem Al Bawadi. To get there, I must pass by Chandelier. As I passed Chandelier, I felt this guilt. This feeling like I was a traitor! Like I was betraying my initial team!!

So I turned back and walked towards Chandelier. I stood there disgruntled and confused. For the life of me, I just couldn’t decide if I wanted to go to Chandelier or Reem! I turned back and went to Reem, then turned back and went back to Chandelier…people were looking at me like I was crazy walking back and forth!

Finally I sat down at Chandelier and realized it was just too hot to sit outside anyway. I re-gathered my belongings and when none of the staff were looking, I snuck away and went back to Reem. (don’t worry – I hadn’t ordered yet!)

Anyway the point is that this internal struggle was truly bizarre.

Is it just me? Or do you sometimes feel guilty and that you’re cheating on your favourite restaurant?

Hmm.. just me, huh!?

Well I told the story to Sulaiman at Reem Al Bawadi, and order to make me aware that I made the “right” decision, he made me a SPECIAL special shisha… with birdies and flowers and the lot. Have a look:

The Curse of the Snooze Button.

I had every intention of getting up early this morning.

I even set TWO different alarms and put one at the other side of the room… but that was a fail.

When the first one went off, I pressed snooze – as usual…and then the second one went off… I actually did get up and turn it off and then got right back into bed!

Do you ever just wish that you were one of those people who just SPRINGS out of bed every morning and is chirpy and energetic??

If you ARE one of those people, please share your secrets with me!!!

The Feeling of Gratitude

You know those days when you just wake up in the morning and your heart is overflowing with love and gratitude for everything in your life?

That’s how I felt this morning.

It’s often easy to get bogged down and into a slump with all the responsibilities, bills, errands, broken hearts, work and overall pressure to make ends meet, but sometimes we just have to stop and take a deep breath and say “Alhamdullilah”.

Be thankful for the little things. For me, this weekend was filled with laughter and love from my wonderful friends, great music, beautiful weather. But there are so many more things that we just take for granted every day.

This thought reminded me of a song by Destiny’s Child that came out ages ago – like way back when I was in high school. The words are inspiring. Something to reflect upon.  Have a look:

I woke up this morning
The sunshine was shining
I put on my happy face
I’m living, I’m able
I’m breathing, I’m grateful
To put on my happy face

Woke up and realized
This world’s not so bad after all
Looked at it through a child’s eyes
And I saw these beautiful
Things that you never think about
Like the ocean, moonlight, stars and clouds
It’s amazing how we don’t
Appreciate our blessings

There’s plenty of people who don’t like me
But there’s ten times more who love me
And I love myself
Sometimes, it gets tough, it gets tough
But I can’t give up, can’t give up
Just take a deep breath, close my eyes
Feel the love and give a smile

It’s me, and I just wanna be happy
Uh, just be happy, uh, just be happy
Today is the day, I am willing to say
I will put all the past behind me, no more enemies
Ready ’cause, I’m living in this world
I wanna make a change, I’m gonna make a change
Put on my happy face

So put on your HAPPY FACE today and approach the world with a smile.

Somehow, a simple thing like that can make everything better.
