#AUSGotTalent

I had the privilege of being a judge for this years #AUSGotTalent show at the American University of Sharjah this week and oh what a night!

Not only was I blown away by the many talented students at AUS (singers, breakdancers, musicians and even magicians!) but there were a few events that made it an evening I will never forget.

Firstly, I met a girl (who has asked to remain nameless) who DOESN’T OWN A MOBILE PHONE AND DOESN’T USE SOCIAL MEDIA! She lost her phone about a year ago and just realized the freedom she felt by not being ‘connected’ and ‘reachable’ all the time, and now she’s lived a wonderful happy and liberated life for a year! I was so inspired by her because I really feel like we have become so enslaved by our phones, chats, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram – whatever it is – that we often miss out on the ‘here and now’. I have noticed that I sleep much later than I plan to simply because I get into bed and get on my phone. I think I will try and take at least a weekend of being ‘phone-free’ and see how that goes.

Speaking of that new Social Media Culture, the second thing I noticed last night was the change in the way we capture the moment. Last year I was also a judge at AUS Got Talent and after the event, several of the students came up to take photos. You know that feeling of asking someone to take a photo for you and worrying that they won’t have the proper photography skills and not get your good angle? Well there seems to be no need to worry about that anymore because last night, no one asked me to take a photo with them. Instead, they came up to me and said “Sheena!!! Selfieeee!!!” and would throw one arm around me and stick the other arm out with their smartphone at the end of it and *click* – moment captured and ready to be shared and tagged on the world wide web! After experiencing this I just had that dreadful “#Selfie” song playing over and over and over in my head… if you haven’t heard it, here you go:  (listen at your own risk :P).

And finally, the moment that will forever make me crack up whenever I think of 50 Cent!

My friend was walking next to me and she could feel this guy staring at her. She glanced at him from the corner of her eye and said to me: “I think that guy is checking me out! Or maybe I know him…” She then turned to get a better look at the perpetrator and burst out laughing. I looked over to see why she was laughing at the guy and realized that it was because it wasn’t a guy at all – it was a CARDBOARD CUT OUT of 50 Cent! Maybe you just had to be there, but I thought it was hilarious! My abs still hurt from laughing about it and I giggle every time I look at the picture of Hemani with Fiddy:

aka the weirdo who was checking her out...

Hemani and Fiddy…aka the weirdo who was checking her out…

Overall, a great event and I can’t wait to be a part of it again next year! Well done, AUS! You really do “got talent”! 🙂

My Carly Rae Jepsen Moment

Do you ever feel like your life should have a theme song? Or that it could be a musical where after certain events, you just break into song??

No?? Okay well I did last night.

I got home pretty late after a really long day only to find that someone had parked in my spot… which is SO annoying… there’s a SIGN that says RESERVED in BIG RED BLOCK LETTERS!!!!!

Highly irritated, I went to the security to report it and there was this guy there who was waiting for security to complain because someone parked in HIS spot too… so we were talking and I thought – hmm… he’s cute!! (I really hope he’s not reading this right now cuz that could be super embarrassing), but anyway – he never asked me for my number or anything so in my head a little voice was urging me to just burst out into song and say “Hey I just met you, and this is crazy, but here’s my number… call me maybe!?”

I didn’t though – for fear it would get me punched in the face.

But I have to admit, it was really hard not to!

If you don’t know the song I’m talking about – I don’t know what rock you’ve been hiding under, but here is my favourite “airband” video of the song:

*Warning: This video will definitely make you feel like dancing around like a carefree 12 year old!

…yet another typical “Sheena Moment”….

I don’t know what it is about me, but for some reason I always have these random, mortifying, unusual, ridiculously silly things happen to me!

Maybe it’s because my head is always in the clouds (or sheenaspace as I like to call it)…

The latest typical “Sheena Moment” happened last night.

I went to Boudoir for the launch of Diamond Wednesdays (I had to support my buddies Brooklyn and Shero cuz they always play my favourite music :p) and I was walking towards the bathroom and bumped into one of the organizers, Kitt…

Now even though I had to “powder my nose” SOOOOOO badly (because telling you I had to pee is a bit too much of an overshare, right!?) I didn’t wanna be rude, so I chatted to Kitt for a bit. To be honest, the whole time we were talking I was barely paying attention because I was so distracted with my need to use the ladies room! (sorry Kitt!)

Finally, I managed to politely escape the conversation and rushed into the bathroom…

After “powdering my nose”, I was being all girly – fixing my hair in the mirror, adjusting my dress, and I was about to pull out my lip gloss and reapply, when out of the corner of my eye, I saw something weird in the reflection of the mirror…

I turned around and was like “what on earth!? I’ve never seen anything like that before”…

And then it dawned on me.

PANIC swept over me as I realized – I WAS IN THE MEN’S TOILETS!!!!

How embarrassing is that!?

I flew out of there as fast as I could and did a little Mission Impossible move…back up against the wall, glancing both ways to make sure no one saw me.

Once the coast was clear, I said a little prayer and THANKED GOD that no one was in there when I went in!
